Most of my students come from poverty and a lot of them do not speak English well. Most all of them have never seen the ocean and have only seen what's in the ocean on a TV. This continuing project would bring the ocean to my students. My salt water aquarium needs more life to inspire my students.
My students have to endure 90+ degree classroom temperatures in the beginning and at the end of the school year.
Our school was built in 1964 and has no air conditioning. My students never complain they love to learn and they love to look into our class aquarium. I would love to be able to have more life in the aquarium but everything is very expensive. Right now there are 4 fish, a few hermit crabs and a few soft corals, if we had more diversity of life represented in the aquarium it would not only be more educational for the students to learn about different species but would also be more fun to look at.
My Project
I am requesting an influx of new life for our aquarium that would consist of Mangrove jellyfish, an invertebrate set including sea stars and sea urchins, a living reef set of corals, a marine fish set of 11 reef fish and 2 giant sea anemones. This diverse group of life would enrich my students lives by giving living representatives of ocean life and they could study them for reports and projects and also be able to have hands on experiences holding starfish and sea urchins.
My project is important to bring the wonder of the ocean to students who have never seen it.
Not only will this project benefit the students in my classes now, it would also benefit future classes who could enjoy the wonders of the ocean.
