Remember playing "house" as a child? Being mommy or daddy to that special baby doll while cooking that gourmet meal with pretend food? Pretend play has gone by the wayside in today's kindergarten classrooms, I want to bring pretend play back to my classroom with new materials.
I have a class full of 18 bright, inquisitive kindergarten kids.
We are an urban low-income school that serves a very diverse population of students grades kindergarten through fifth grade.
Students in my classroom come from many different backgrounds but they all have one thing in common, they all love to play!
My Project
Many of my students have not had the opportunity for real play based learning. With these materials, miniature versions of things they find in their own homes, I hope to encourage playing to learn. When children have the opportunity to play without a lot of adult interaction, they learn skills such as negotiation, sharing, cooperation and empathy. The pretend play center will be used daily to encourage and reinforce these skills.
We are very fortunate to have a playhouse built right into my classroom.
However, the materials within the playhouse have become dirty, old and worn. By providing new pretend play materials my students will not only have more of an opportunity to play and learn but will want to play even more! I want to provide my students with these new materials to bring a more developmentally appropriate curriculum to my kindergarten students.
