This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Have you ever seen the pride and joy in a child's face when he or she reads independently for the first time? That is the feeling I want my kindergarten students to have.

My students are 95% African-American, living in Brooklyn, New York.

For many of them, my kindergarten class will be the first time they have ever touched a book. Brownsville is a low-income community where many live below the poverty like. We know that education is one way to break the cycle of poverty and we know that the earlier children start reading, the more likely it is that they will continue to do so for the rest to their lives. I want my students to be life long readers. Please help me make that happen with a generous donation of any amount you can afford.

My Project

The classroom materials that I have chosen will be used everyday to inspire, support and encourage students to read. ELMO TT-02RX is a document camera that allows me to provide the information on a flat screen for the entire class to see, to provide an interactive learning experience for my students which in turn increases their comprehension level . This equipment also allows students to read and write with a partner which is a crucial learning method especially in early childhood.

Like public schools everywhere, my school's budget is cut to the bone and so we simply can't afford to buy products like these.

There is a great lack of text books for my kindergarten class. This simply means that not all students will get books to practice (How is this possible in this day and age?!!). With this equipment we can share the lessons/exercise for literacy, math and science with the whole group and students can work with partners to share the learning experience.
