Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Although my students are 2nd graders, by the time they are in 8th grade the reading material they will be required to comprehend will be 60-80% informational texts. We need to start them young learning to love reading for information!
I work in a large, urban district in Illinois, where funding is very tight to say the least.
My students come from a very under-resourced community and 96% of our students qualify for free or reduced priced lunch. Our students love coming to school and they love learning. Year after year I try to make sure that I have the right materials and pedagogy to give them the educational experience they deserve.
My Project
I have noticed over the past few years that my struggling readers struggle even more with informational texts, and my "on-level" readers become "below-level" when reading informational texts. Therefore, many students shy away from choosing non-fiction as a genre altogether. It is not that my students don't love learning about insects and snakes and other countries, but rather that they don't like to read books they don't understand. Who can blame them? In order to combat this recurring theme, I have done research on a new method for teaching informational texts - PRC2. This strategy allows students to work together, talk to each other, and find success in reading non-fiction. In order to implement PRC2 effectively, I need to improve my collection of informational texts in my classroom library. I plan to use the PRC2 strategy daily in my classroom, as a literacy station. I also want to display my students' "new learning" somewhere in the classroom to celebrate their findings.
Please help me accomplish my goal of implementing PRC2 in my classroom this year and in years to come.
My students will love learning about animals, matter, famous Americans, other countries, and more! They need these books to give them choice and books on their individual level with rich photographs to help their comprehension of new concepts. Using the books with the PRC2 model my students' reading comprehension will improve tremendously! Your donation will truly impact student learning!
