Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Last year I was walking behind a first grade class in the school yard when it started to flurry. One of the little girls stopped in her tracks and said "Wow, look at the snowflakes", as she tried to catch them. Then she wondered aloud," Where did they come from?" My students have similar questions.
I teach boys and girls between the ages of nine and eleven in NYC.
A number of my students are English Language Learners and have special needs, primarily in reading and writing. Most read and write below grade level.
My students are hardworking and ambitious. However, due to a myriad of circumstances, including a lack of readily-available reading and writing resources, their entry point into literacy was delayed. They are struggling to catch up to their grade/age peers.
Reading research has found that students who are struggling readers should have ready access to books of various genres so that they may develop reading stamina. In order to accomplish this goal my students need to read books in volume, not only at school but also at home. They also need to reread familiar books in order to practice the skills that are needed to become proficient readers and lifelong learners. I believe that creating a seed library in their homes is a first step in the right direction.
My Project
I am requesting various Non-Fiction texts that is fascinating to boys and girls of of my students age and ability level. Since my students are reading below grade level it is difficult to get non-fiction texts into their hands that are at their reading level. In spite of this, they love non-fiction text. They are mesmerized by insects, ocean life, outer space, weather phenomena and the like. It is heartbreaking to see my students get excited about a topic or subject and then lack the resources to follow-up on their curiosity. My request for the collection of books titled Amphibians, Life Cycles, Insects, Outer Space, Plant Cycles, Marine Life and Transportation is an attempt at a solution to this problem. These books will be a welcome addition to their fledgling seed libraries. After reading the requested books in shared reading activities (and then reading them independently)my students will journal their learning and understanding about what they have read.
By contributing to my project you will immeasurably enrich the lives of my students.
Your thoughtfulness and generosity will allow them to not only allow my students to find the answers independently to the many questions they may have about various topics, but it will also help them to open their minds and hearts to being good stewards and problem solvers.
