Environmental Science - Botantical Garden

My students need a set of garden tools, with plants and fish to restore a courtyard which includes a man-made pond in order to better appreciate nature as they learn about Environmental Science.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students have never experienced first hand where their food comes from or have experienced animals outside of a "pest" status such as rats or cockroaches. My goal is to allow students to get a better understanding of nature through more positive first hand experiences.

My students are juniors and seniors in high school.

Most live in apartments in an urban neighborhood and have never experienced nature other than driving by grass on the road. My goal is to give them a better appreciation of nature as they learn about Environmental Science through hands on experience with a courtyard restoration, particularly a neglected pond and several different gardening experiments. We have collected an assortment of rescued wildlife including rabbits and ducks that the students enjoy taking care of.

My Project

I plan to use these resources to create a self-sustaining pond complete with fish, ducks and plants so that my students can experience first hand nature and appreciate the delicacy and beauty of a courtyard. Currently our courtyard looks like a construction zone and suffers from the Texas heat. My goal is to demonstrate to students how through xeriscaping and good land management, a beautiful wilderness can be created and maintained. In addition to experiencing nature first hand, I also hope to inspire my students with pride for their school and for the work that they've created.

Last year, my Environmental Science class began its courtyard restoration by repairing a neglected pond and planting an assortment of vegetables.

Many of my students who were traditionally "trouble" students were inspired in their classwork with the reward of "feeding the bunnies." Towards the end of the school year, our efforts were rewarded when a mother duck elected to lay her eggs within the safety of our courtyard.
