My students need books to seed their libraries. These 9 collections of Favorite Series books have recurring characters, arcs, and themes which make them especially suitable for reluctant readers.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I remember hurrying home from school and hastily completing my chores in order to get to the most exciting part of my day: the uninterrupted time I spent reading. Being transported to the fantastical worlds of the characters I met in books was magical. I want my students to experience the magic too.
I teach boys and girls between the ages of nine and eleven in NYC.
A number of my students are English Language Learners and have special needs, primarily in reading and writing. Most read and write below grade level.
My students are hardworking and ambitious. However, due to a myriad of circumstances, including a lack of readily-available reading and writing resources, their entry point into literacy was delayed. They are struggling to catch up to their grade/age peers.
Reading research has found that students who are struggling readers should have ready access to books of various genres so that they may develop reading stamina. In order to accomplish this goal my students need to read books in volume, not only at school but also at home. They also need to reread familiar books in order to practice the skills that are needed to become proficient readers and lifelong learners. I believe that creating a seed library in their homes is a first step in the right direction.
My Project
I am requesting series books that are consistently rated as favorites by boys and girls of my students' age and ability level. Reading books such as the Third-Grade Detectives will teach my students how to be problem solvers in their daily lives. Henry and Mudge and Kids of Polk Street will teach them about friendships and how to be a friend, not only to each other but also to animals. Amelia Bedelia will helps them to realize that humor is an important element to tap into when circumstances seems dire. Marvin Redpost and Pinky and Rex will help them to understand and solve many of the problems that they will confront on a daily basis as elementary school students.
After reading the requested books in shared reading activities (and then reading them independently) students will be able to journal their learning and feelings about what they read. As a followup to their journal entries, the students will converse with their teacher and peers about the plot, themes and lessons learned.
By contributing to my project you will immeasurably enrich the lives of my students.
Your thoughtfulness and generosity will allow them to experience worlds beyond their own realities, by reading books that will be readily available in both their classrooms and their homes. Because of your gift my students will travel to strange countries, go on adventures, and experience different ways of living and being in the world. And they will carry these experiences with them for the rest of their lives.
