Looking for a great way to get students excited about learning with technology? An iPod Touch Learning System is a wonderful way to incorporate technology into the classroom. It is just the way for students to learn by placing their education in the palm of their hands.
I teach at an inner-city school to a very energetic bunch of boys and girls.
My school receives help from the Title 1 and Free Lunch programs. I would love to say that my students have everything that they need to be successful, but that is not true. But I want them to be confident and start to develop skills and knowledge that would allow an individual to make informed and effective decisions through their understanding and use of technology. Technological literacy is the same as financial literacy. All students need to learn the right things that will make them effective lifetime learners in order to take care of themselves and their future. Class sizes at my school are not getting any smaller. We are getting more students and space is a premium. The storage space required for 25 iPod Touches is significantly less than that needed for 25 computers.
Students can have notebooks and other resources out while using their iPod Touch, and take them anywhere in the building to complete assignments. It is intuitive, responsive, highly motivating, tactile for visual learners, and allows movement for kinesthetic learners. Photos, videos, music, documents, and activities can be stored and played back with just a few taps on the screen. If that wasn't enough, then how about the thousands of Apps. iBooks would allow my students to read and listen to books on the iTouch like Civil War on Sunday and Revolutionary War on Thursday for history from the Magic Tree House series featuring Jack and Annie. There are apps for math that will allow students to master basic math facts and to use a number line to learn decimals, percents, and fractions. Science 101 will quiz students in different science concepts and Science glossary defines terms and gives visuals to help with meaning. There is even a Madlibs app just like the childhood books.
The idea behind this project is simple.
To give a student everything that they would need to be an independent thinking person who can survive in today's society because they have the necessary tools to be competitive in the world around them. Students should have the freedom to learn in a way that will bring them the greatest success. This project is ambitious, but the rewards for technological and financial literacy is there and my students are worth it. Don't you think?
