This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Math doesn't have to be intimidating if you present it using the right kind of motivation.
I teach an introductory art class in an inner city high school in the District of Columbia.
For the vast majority of my students, this course is the only arts instruction they receive during their high school career. My classroom includes students in grades 9-12, in a special ed inclusion setting.
During a recent grid drawing lesson I discovered that the majority of my students did not know how to properly measure using a ruler. I took the opportunity to alter my lesson and focus on creating geometric artwork. We studied non-objective Islamic art, Op Art, and practiced linear perspective. By week's end, even my most reluctant learners were experimenting with compasses, rulers and protractors to create new designs.
My Project
I serve a student population that consistently performs poorly on standardized math tests. In order to excel in higher level math classes, my students need to be able to visualize mathematical information in graphical terms. The rulers and compasses that we found in the storage room were in very poor condition and did not produce very professional results.
We need six different art supplies, including paper, compasses, pencils, erasers, and rulers for our geometry exploration. I would like to maintain the level of excitement the students have for geometric art by motivating them with the necessary tools.
My students have the ability to meet the expectations in math courses by participating in math-based art making.
By using geometric terms to talk about and create art, they will increase their familiarity with terms and ideas necessary for college-level learning. By contributing to this project, you will help to make math a little less intimidating and fun.
