Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Is it time for math yet?" The infamous question that is always asked in my classroom by 10 A.M. My students love math and are always excited to solve problems and find new strategies. Despite their enthusiasm, most of my students have difficulty with basic math skills such as adding and subtracting.

My students are from one of the poorest congressional districts in the United States-The South Bronx.

Many of my special education students are from the nearby shelters and live chaotic and often transient lifestyles. School is their constant and they enjoy the routine. Not having the basic skills is difficult for them and sometimes even something fun like Math can be frustrating for them. What they lack in skill they make up for in motivation and they are excited for new challenges. They enjoy hands-on activities such as projects and games, and I often find that they will find new ways of learning things by working in self-guided groups.

My Project

With the addition of math games in our classroom, my students will be able to take a break from the textbooks and the test prep to enjoy a fun, hands-on activity that will still allow them to learn. These math games, with topics such as multiplication, fractions and decimals, will allow my students to see some difficult concepts in a new and exciting way and will help to reinforce the basic skills that a person truly needs in life. In addition working in cooperative groups help my students learn to take turns, be respectful, honest and how to follow rules. All of these skills are also essential as they grow older into teenagers and young adults.

This project is important to my students because it gives my students another way to learn and every way of learning counts.

So many special education students get counted out and many people don't believe that they can progress and improve but I know that's not true. Any way that we can get our students to learn is another door that we can open for them. As a community it's important to do whatever we can for schools and our students. I thank you for considering my project and my students!
