The majority of my students face poverty, be it situational, emotional or generational. Think about any child you know and the imagination that they hold. For some children, writing and creativity are their get away from any type of poverty they are facing.
Our student population is challenged by generational and situational poverty.
This results in absentee and/or uninvolved parents, little ability to focus and follow through, negative social behaviors, and an acute lack of personal responsibility.
Ours is a PK-5 neighborhood school with 70.09% of its total student population on the free and reduced meal program. Students are a mix of socio-economic backgrounds, gender, races, and academic abilities.
My Project
These materials will provide a personal place for my students to explore creative writing. For beginning writers, the journal prompts will give them a starting place. As they continue to blossom, they can leave the prompts behind and venture out on their own. The various stamps will also provide them with a surprise prompt every now and then to pump up the creative juices.
During journal time, students will also begin learning about editing. As they finish, we will spend time one on one discussing their entry. We will talk about parts of speech, adding more details, and punctuation to name a few.
Kindergarten is the stepping stone to education.
These materials will allow the students to see where they started and how much they have grown. Students will walk away with daily accomplishments since this project is all about their writing and creativity.
