My Students

Love to read? My students don't. Many do not have reading materials at home and have little encouragement to pick up a book and read. As a result, many find it hard to keep up with their studies. I hope to change that by filling my classroom with high-interest books.

My students are from a rural county in North Carolina.

Many of them are learning disabled or are classified as poverty-level. Some are still learning the English language. They are great kids and want to succeed, but often do not have enough support structure at home to do so. Many do not read well because there has been no encouragement to practice. They are all first time ninth graders who have shown a difficulty in reading comprehension. This is a vital grade in high school since success in ninth grade often results in graduation. Failure in ninth grade often results in dropping out.

My Project

Holy Reading Materials! The graphic novels I have chosen are meant to inspire the students to want to read. Some (Twilight, Percy Jackson, Maximum Ride, etc.) were chosen as a lead in to novels that I already have with the hope that if they like the graphic novel, they will also like the books. The Spider-Man graphic novels were chosen for those who are really shy about picking up a book, but might not see a comic book as being intimidating. This might inspire them to pick up another graphic novel that would be a gateway into a regular prose novel.

Reading is so important to success in life, inside and outside of the classroom.

The only way to get better at reading is to read. Forcing students to read out of a text book often leads to a hatred of reading. Giving a student an option to choose what to read makes the student more likely to want to give that book a try. I have several high interest novels in the class. By including some graphic novels, students will feel less intimidated and will read more willingly.
