Opening a book opens the world to a child. I have started a book club for some fourth grade students. I would like the students to read the same book and be able to discuss the book during our lunch time meetings. Right now we do not have enough books for all the students in the club.
We have a FANTASTIC school.
Our students are very diverse and becoming more diverse (economically and ethnically) with each passing year. I have a great group of fourth graders who love to read and I am trying to encourage them to not only read, but to share their love of reading with other students.
My Project
I have requested 3 sets of books to start our club off. Right now our club cannot ALL read the same book because we do not have enough copies of one book. Having all twelve students reading the same book at the same time will be great for the students. We meet during lunch one day a week and if I have three sets of books, I may be able to do more than one group (maybe at lunch on different days) so that I can give this great opportunity to any 4th grader who wants to participate.
There are so many distractions in this world, TV, the Internet, iPods, video games etc..
that kids are not reading today. By having this club I hope to spark a child's interest in reading and hopefully instill a lifelong love of reading.
