Many of us have wonderful memories of school field trips from our childhoods. And nothing fosters curiosity and wonder like a day experiencing animals up-close at the zoo. For 125 kindergarten students, this trip will truly be the highlight of the school year!
Our public school houses 5 kindergarten classrooms, totaling 125 students.
Approximately 80% of these students receive free lunch and come from low income homes. Few, if any, of our students have educational experiences outside of the school walls due to the limited incomes/resources of their families.
As you've seen in the news, many "extras" in public schools have been cut. Art class, gym class, music and after-school sports are slowing becoming extinct. Along with these casualties are field trips. A few years ago, our district was able to fund transportation for 2 field trips per year. Then it was limited to one field trip per year. And now, we're allowed to take one field trip per year if families can cover the total cost for their child. The families of our students do their best to donate their time, school supplies and special items for holiday celebrations. But by the time spring rolls around, money is tight and it is very difficult for parents to not only pay for their child's zoo admission, but their own admission price as well. Last year, we (the teachers) ended up covering the cost for students who otherwise would have been unable to attend because their family couldn't afford the cost.
The Children's Zoo trip is the first field trip many of these students will ever experience.
Our students look forward to it all year long. We incorporate math, reading, writing and science standards into the preparation for this trip. I would LOVE to surprise all of our kindergarten students and chaperons with the news that Donors Choose.org donors have funded our 2011 zoo trip! Please make our students ROAR with excitement by helping fund this project by April!
