"But Ms. Astrue, I'm an L. There aren't anymore books on the L shelf!" My students can tell you exactly what kinds of books they should be reading to improve their skills -- they are also quick to offer up that some leveled baskets have no books in them and the rest only have a few options.
As a 4th grade teacher at a second year school, I have a class of students who come from diverse backgrounds educationally, economically and culturally.
Many of them have incredibly low self-confidence when it come to their ability to read. A majority of my students are reading below grade level by anywhere from a few months to a few years. Despite their individual challenges, I can see how each of them approaches reading with a voracious appetite.
I want to use series to introduce my children to worlds of fiction and fantasy. By focusing on series, I want to give them a more natural next step in terms of what they should be reading. Learning how to select a book is one of the most important skills that we are working on this year -- many children are selecting books way too difficult for them because of the pressure to read chapter books. While they can recognize the words on the page, they get to the end of the chapter and have no recollection of what they read. My students will learn how to select ability appropriate books and be able to practice skills necessary to raise their reading level.
My students need guidance in selecting books.
By having sets of series available in the classroom for reading, they can practice selecting books. They will also have a natural next step, as they can look to the rest of the books in the series for their next selection.
