Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hot or cold? Fahrenheit or Celsius? Students learning to measure temperature are often confused by the numbers and lines on the thermometers we have in our science lab. We don't have enough for each student to have one as we work, and the numbers are too small for them to see clearly.

Our school is a Title I campus in an inner city neighborhood.

Most of my students are English Language Learners with few opportunities for science experiences outside the classroom. They are eager to learn the science concepts, and as second language learners need as many concrete examples as possible to make connections to the words they see on the state mandated science exam.

My Project

The children hear the meteorologist announce the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit on television or the radio and have difficulty understanding the difference between what they hear and the Celsius numbers used in science. When using the thermometers we have, they often mix up the two and get more confused when their experiment results don't match with what they have learned should happen. We don't have enough thermometers for each student to have their own for close examination, and the numbers on the one used for teacher demonstrations are too small for them to see. Having more thermometers means that each student will have one in hand, while I am able to use the classroom sized thermometer as an example for them to follow along as practice.

Reading a thermometer and understanding boiling and freezing points of different substances is one of the science objectives students are tested on in the spring.

Having enough thermometers for each student to use in whole group practice and workstations will help my students be more successful in mastering the concept of temperature.
