Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Finding whole class novels that capture my students imagination, interest, and reaches all reading levels is a difficult task. Graphic novels enables all of this!
My students attend eighth grade in an urban setting and, like all eighth graders, are beginning to navigate their way through adolescence.
My students reading levels range from two-three years below grade level to a few who are above grade level. They are task motivated students, driven by their desire to learn and mature (and pass onto high school!).
My Project
I am asking for a set of Gene Luen Yang's fantastic graphic novel American Born Chinese to complement our year long study of outsiders and fitting in. We are also reading The Outsiders, House on Mango Street, Romeo and Juliet and Enders' Game. This novel would fit in wonderfully with the them, as well as introduce students to graphic novels. I would weave in elements of the theme and encourage students to see the connection between pictures and words. Students will be asked to compose their own graphic story upon completion of the novel.
I believe that this novel will serve as a great introduction to graphic novels, an ever-growing genre that many students are not aware is viable literature.
I would also love to work closely with the art teacher to educate students on the connection between words and art.
