Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My kids need resources which will allow them to study ancient cultures, to learn about American history, and they need fun and interesting novels and books which will engage them during independent reading time. They need in particular references and fun novels to flesh out their classroom library.

My students are 6th and 7th graders at an urban charter school in Maryland.

Most of the 6th graders have been at this charter school for several years, but my 7th graders are coming from a different public school which was closed last year. I have a blend of interests and abilities, from students who are advanced for their grade level to kids who read three or four grades below level. All of them are eager to learn, however, and all they need are the appropriate materials easily available.

My Project

After 3 years as a Language Arts teacher, I've built up a reasonably deep classroom library. Now, however,I've moved to a new school and I'm teaching Humanities, which means I need to teach language arts and social studies together. My kids need resources which will engage them in a variety of topics we'll cover this year: ancient civilizations, immigration, and the Civil War. My kids need fun and engaging books at different reading levels to help kids develop a passion for reading, they need research resources to help them find out more about the topics we'll cover this year, and they also need periodicals which will help me teach reading strategies using current events. Kids love magazines, which are rich in visuals and engaging text.

Your donation will ensure my kids have access to books and periodicals they can borrow and read during class time.

They will have reference materials to help them research topics we'll cover this year, and there will be multiple copies of novels related to those topics for literature circle discussion groups. Together we can help ensure my urban students have access to the same materials their counterparts in the county enjoy. My ultimate goal is to create life-long readers. You can help!
