Like Goldilocks, my kids are in search of what's just right. However, their hunger is for books, not porridge.
My first grade class is a group of inspiring students, most of whom come from economically disadvantaged and minority backgrounds.
In spite of the challenges they face both in and out of school, they come each day excited to learn. For many of them, their favorite part of our room is the library - a cozy, carpeted corner near the window with colorful posters and comfy pillows. They often beg to go into the reading area to choose their own books, lacking the same resources at home.
My Project
Most of the books in my reading area have been donated,, and as a result, not every reading level is represented. Many students choose books that are either too hard or too easy for them because of this dilemma. By having a full leveled library complete with chapter books, all students in my class will be able to find a just-right book regardless of their individual reading level. The class pocket chart will further foster a love for reading in my students by giving each child his or her own book pocket. This will allow me to build strong relationships with my students by working with them to select appropriate texts that also match their interests.
Without a full set of leveled books, and a way of organizing them for individual students, many of the students in my classroom would be severely limited in their choices for independent reading.
The ones most affected are those reading above or below a first grade reading level, lacking books that are suitable for their needs. By donating to support this project, you are providing all the children in my classroom with the resources they need to become lifelong readers and learners.
