You CAN tell a book by its cover! When young students see the cover of a book, they are more likely to pick it up and start reading than if they just looked at the book from the side.
I teach Kindergarten in a high-poverty school in Tennessee.
Currently all of my students are on free lunch and most come from single-parent households. They do not have the resources available to read at home for pleasure. It is so important to offer them a strong Kindergarten experience so that they are ready for the rest of their school career. We are a new school this school year. We are in a temporary location this year while our school building is being renovated. In July we hope to move into a fresh, remodeled building. Because it is a new school in a new building, there is very little furniture available in the classrooms. This bookshelf will be a welcome addition to my classroom!
My students love looking at books! This new bookshelf will help organize our classroom library, as well as encourage more "book browsing" among students. The separated bins will allow me to organize books by category and the front-facing feature will make books more appealing to students. We are currently using a traditional bookshelf, which makes it hard to see more than the spine of a book. This bookshelf will allow my disadvantaged students the opportunity to fall in love with books!
I am finishing my first year of teaching, and one of the most important things I have learned is how valuable books are to a child's education.
With a better bookshelf, I will be able to better equip my classroom and serve my students. This donation will not only help for next school year, but all of the school years to follow. Who knows how many children will fall in love with books by using this bookshelf??
