Our current tables are meant for meeting rooms or reading groups. Students are wiggled and jiggled when another student is erasing work, getting up or sitting down, or walking by and accidentally bumping a table. A project that has been worked on for hours can be ruined in seconds!
Our High School students are a mixture of kids whose parents care, and who's parents never know if they make it to school in a week or not.
Having a clean, comfortable environment that they feel they can be productive in, encourages our students to come to school. Sometimes, the only person in their life who cares is a teacher that they spend 60 minutes with each day. I want my students to know that I view them as artists in training. They need to have adequate supplies and tools. Quality Art lessons, working art tables, art supplies, and a room that facilitates art makes our students feel that I am serious about their education, and that they should be too.
My Project
Art is messy. One student can take up half the room if they spread out. My students currently sit at a table that would be comfortable for approximately 4 students if they were working on math. Working on art at these tables is a nightmare. I have sat and worked with them, and there is nothing more frustrating than working on a project for hours, and then having someone else bump the table. Your pen, pencil, or paint brush goes skidding across your page and your art is RUINED!! New tables will eliminate disastrous bumps. It will also give my students a feeling of professionalism. Knowing they are coming into my room and working on "official" art tables will give them a sense of ownership and empowerment. They will each have their own table and their own space to be creative and to flourish artistically.
Our School is shrinking.
Our funding barely covers adequate art supplies. The Art Department has been neglected for the past few years and I would like to have the opportunity to give it a fresh start. New tables will give our classroom a face lift. Students will have the opportunity to work on their art as pre-professionals. Knowing I care enough to find the resources to make their education the best available will also instill a sense of pride in our Art Department and our school. Thank You
