Imagine reading at a level that is lower than that of your peers, stuck with book topics that may have been suitable for kindergarten, but you want to read about sports, science, and history like all the other kids. This is how many of my low readers feel by the time they are in third grade.
I am an ESOL endorsed third grade teacher.
The poverty rate at our school is 40% and rising. We have an increasing number of English Language learners each year. Many students in my class, are dealing with learning disabilities and ADHD. Many parents are working multiple jobs which often puts students under the care of television and video games rather than reading and talking with an adult. In the classroom, I need to make up for that lost adult time that is so critical to reading and thinking skills -as well as ability to focus for extended periods of time.
I teach in a building that is currently overcrowded. Currently our computer lab is in a noisy hallway, and it is likely that next year we will also have a classroom there. Our supplies are spread thinly. Each classroom must accommodate a wide range of reading levels, which has become increasingly difficult as more children enter school as struggling readers and writers.
My Project
Third grade is a critical year for children. Beyond this year they are expected to be fluent, accurate readers with a firm foundation in comprehension skills who can work independently while maintaining focus for extended periods of time. This means I must keep my students motivated and focused on improving their skills all year long.
Time cannot be wasted scrounging for books. I need to have a wide selection of appropriate level books for my students to choose from. I find that children -boys especially -can quickly lose interest and motivation if there aren't books that they're interested in reading. They want to read about the same things that students performing at grade level are reading -sports, science, and history for example. However, when a student does find a selection of books he or she really enjoys, I've seen their reading take off time and time again, and writing skills are quick to improve from there. I need these books to boost students to 4th grade!
These books would make such a difference to diversify our classroom library -in reading level and choice of subject.
I know they're just the thing to spark the interest of my readers that need the encouragement of reading a "good fit" book. They'll love sharing the information they've discovered with their peers and feel so successful. My students are ready to shoot ahead in reading. I've seen it happen before, and I know these books are a huge part of helping that to happen.
