Through the generous support of Chess in the Schools, my 3rd-grade class has the amazing opportunity to learn chess! Now we need YOU, to give us the tools to practice and become life-long chess players.
Having taught my students for the past 3 years (I keep moving up with them), I have seen them transform from little 6-year-olds, who barely knew their letters or how to wash their hands, to these extremely mature 9-year-olds, who have discussions with one another, demonstrate critical thinking skills, and have already met the reading benchmarks for 3rd grade.
Two weeks ago, my students began their weekly meetings with the Chess-In-The-Schools representative, and already they are in love! The other day, they took a class vote that they wanted to skip recess to practice their chess skills!
My students love playing chess, and I love seeing them engaged in an activity that fosters both their critical and strategic thinking skills, and engages them in friendly competition. Even though they have only learned about the bishop and the rook, they are eager to hone their skills, and wait impatiently for the day that they can shout the elusive words "Check Mate!" We were able to borrow some chess boards from the program, but we need more! I would like to provide each of my students with their own chess sets, so that they can practice even after our wonderful sessions run out.
It is so inspiring for me to see my students so excited by such an intellectually focused game.
I already feel like their other work is improving due to their focus on concentration and strategy. Please help me to provide my students with the extraordinary experience of becoming life-long chess players. By having access to chess sets both at home and school, I know that they will meet their goal of finally being able to say " Check Mate!"
