it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students face challenges everyday with learning and understanding a new language socially and academically. I want them to see first hand how they can use the Science academic vocabulary that is mandatory in the 5th grade in North Carolina.
We are a rural Title I school in North Carolina.
97% of our students receive free or reduced lunch on a daily basis. 89% of these students are learning English as their second language. These students do not have the background knowledge that is necessary to fully understand and apply Science vocabulary and concepts. I want them to be able to make connections to text, experiments and pictures. This limited background knowledge is due to lack of outside of school experiences. Many of them do not have televisions, take vacations or even have a chance to leave this town. I want to bring the world to their fingertips through these experiments and realistic pictures.
My Project
I am requesting Science kits from Lakeshore Learning Company that address, weather, habitats, physics and earth science. These are the topics that my 5th grade students have to master in order to be promoted to 6th grade. There are also wonderful realistic pictures for the students to look at as they are saying and learning the new academic vocabulary words.
This project is so important to me and my students because academic vocabulary can be so abstract, I want to make it concrete for my students through pictures and hands on experiments.
Research has shown that ELL students can be successful by using these strategies.
