Action, adventure, heroes, and villains! My students absolutely love reading, but we have very few class sets of books. They chose "The Lightning Thief" and are eagerly awaiting the novels.
My students attend a rural, high poverty, all African-American public school in Mississippi.
They have very few opportunities to explore new worlds, so we try to visit as many places as we can through books. We have already read two novels and many short stories this year, but my students are clamoring for more imaginary trips in the pages of books.
The more high quality literature my students read, the more they ask to read. I know that the only way they will succeed in life is if they learn to love reading. By providing them with a brand new class set of novels, you will be helping my students take ownership of their lives and their learning. "The Lightning Thief" will expose my students to Greek mythology in a modern, accessible story and will help them analyze harder literature the further they go in school. Likewise, the themes and conflicts the characters face in "The Lightning Thief" will teach my students the qualities of resourcefulness, humility, and perseverance that will help them make opportunities for themselves later in life.
I am lucky in that my students constantly ask to read more books.
Unfortunately, my district does not have the money to make their desires a reality. Reading is fundamental to a good education. Please help me provide my students with the resources necessary to foster my students' love of reading.
