Everyday I tell my students to "read, read, read and think, think, think" and now you can help me bring this message to life! I teach in an urban charter school in a high-crime, high poverty area. Yet everyday, my students walk in the door with a smile, ready to work hard at becoming better readers.
For some reason, my lowest readers ALWAYS go for the chapter books. They might be reading at a kindergarten level, but when given the option, they will sit and stare at text that they don't understand with few pictures to entice them. The simple desire to really BE a reader is what draws them to those way-too-hard books. During our reading block, students have time to read independently. I teach my students how to choose "just right" books, but honestly it is very difficult for many students to select appropriately leveled books for themselves to read, without my direct help.
In my classroom library, books are not leveled and students have no way of easily accessing appropriately leveled books without my help. Much of my time is spent stapling paper books that I have printed off the computer so that I can make sure my students are reading the right level books.
You can help make our independent reading process 100% easier! With a leveled library, students will be able to easily pick books from their personal level from clearly labeled book tubs. You can help us take the guess work out of reading time. This project would be huge for our classroom and as such, I can't do it alone! Join me and my little readers in becoming lifelong book lovers!
