Mathematics in my classroom is about students talking, doing and showing how they think mathematically to solve problems.
Talking math is learning mathematics. To do that students need to be able to show their work and explain their thinking to each other.
A document camera allows students (and their teacher) to talk and show their thinking on a piece of paper, which is then projected for all to see, at the same time. It brings alive the thinking involved in solving a problem. As students all think differently it opens up the potential for more students to easily make presentations to their classmates, so that all students can see, hear and discuss how students think through problems.
The abilities to make presentations with confidence, communicate clearly and collaborate with others are considered essential life skills both by colleges and future employers.
Your support will help bring into my classroom a piece of technology that will immediately involve all students in collaborating with each other to talk about and learn mathematics, mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills.
