Where in the world is our clue? Geocaching in math equals real world situational experiences!
My name is Mrs. U and I teach 80 sixth graders in a school that services low income students and is located next to a military base in North Carolina.
In our school district, we have 2 class sets of hand held gps units. You have to check them out months in advanced at times to have a crack at getting them for maybe a week at a time. I recently went to Teacher Academy this past summer and it was for technology for the 21st century. We learned what geocaching is and how to do it with students. If I had the supplies readily at hand, I could do these types of activities more frequently with my students.
For this project, which will benefit 80 students, I need as many hand held gps units as possible. This project, I am asking for 4 units. I can get started with only 4 units and do it with small groups. This project will show the students how graphing is done, the unit will allow for them to live the experience and experience how people around the world get around based on 21st century technology. The gps units will have them find caches around our campus which will lead them to the next, while having to solve a math problem to get the next coordinates to plug into the gps. Doing this at teacher academy, I fell in love with it and mentioning it to my students have them excited to get the chance to have the same experience. This will benefit them because it will tie together: math, science, 21st century skills, technology, and benefiting the world by preparing them for real world situations.
With your help, it will be possible for my students to experience hands-on activities that most students do not get to see until college. I would love to let loose, give them the units, their first coordinate, and the campus (world) will be theirs! I am so excited about this project and feel that with your help, we can get our students out of the textbook and learning real world experiences with what they know best and love, technology!
