"Is that an "a" an "o" or an "e"?" It can be really hard to learn Chemistry when the old fashion chalkboard in the room does not erase well enough to read the new material being written on the board. Please help my High School Chemistry students in a high-need, low socioeconomic community in Illinois be prepared to compete in the 21st century as they learn Chemistry. This piece of technology will allow them to be engaged and learn in an interactive manner as they improve their technology skills and prepare for college.
In the first weeks of the school year I fell in love with the students that fill my classroom everyday. Their respect is unending, their spirits strong but their academic future is in jeopardy. Our yearly drop out rate is 12% with our freshman class over 500 hundred students while our senior class is 300. Our students are stuck in a cycle of poverty in which they see no escape and struggle to find motivation to engage in their academic career to help propel themselves out of the cycle.
My students are currently competing in an Academic Triathlon in which my four sections of Chemistry are in competition in three areas: Attendance, Homework Completion and Overall Class Average. Throughout the first two weeks of the Triathlon I have seen strides in academic improvement. What an incredible incentive if they could know that other people care about their education. What kind of impact could it have for my students to know that instead of an old fashioned chalk board which doesn't erase and they cannot read, they could have cutting edge technology? We are striving to break a cycle of poverty and prepare our students for college. The item I am requesting is a portable interactive device that communicates with a computer. It would allow me to write using the LCD projector rather than the chalkboard and chalk we are currently using. Additionally, it would allow students to get up and give presentations and work with interactive media in a way that we cannot currently. What a great way to prepare our students for college, helping them gain the technological literacy that will help them not only be successful in college but the world beyond.
I need your help! We can't fight this cycle on our own. This piece of technology will engage students that are not engaged through old fashioned means. It will allow my students to interact with material in a new and powerful way. It will let my students know that they matter and they deserve resources to help them be prepared for the next steps of their education. It will allow all students to be able to see, read and interact with the material being presented on a daily basis. You will make it possible for my students to know that anything is possible, to master Chemistry and complete their High School education.
