My classroom is located in the Southeast region of Louisiana and is comprised of 4th grade students. My school is located in a rural community with a declining population. My classroom contains students at a variety of educational levels.
One of the main themes of the 4th grade Social Studies Curriculum is regions. Throughout the year my students will be coloring and label maps of the United States and other countries. We will be focusing on the different regions that make up our wonderful country. Our textbook contains many maps and diagrams that are color coded. We use blank maps in many of our lessons. I'm running into a problem with these maps. The students do not have the markers, crayons, or color pencils of their own to label these maps like they are presented in the books. I have only a few classroom sets of markers and crayons, but not nearly enough for all of my students. I teach 4 different sections of this subject. Also, Social Studies is a subject that presents many opportunities for constructing and developing advertisements, brochures, and commercials. My students do not have the writing tools, or poster paper to make these sorts of things in class or at home.
I feel that poster board, markers, and color pencils would benefit my students tremendously. They would be able to color code their maps to make them look exactly like the ones presented to them. This would also give them the tools to make presentations on the material they learn. As you can see from my picture, they area learning alot. They feel really special when they can write and draw the concepts they learn. My students love to see their work on the wall.
Your help will help my students to visually learn more this year. I feel that most of these concepts especially map related should be coded. This will help them material the remember. The poster boards will allow the students to make class presentations. I know my students will feel extremely proud making a presentation on their own poster board. You will enhance my student's learning this year.
