Mrs. Benjamin from Indianapolis, IN is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
See what Mrs. Benjamin is requestingMy students need 2 GPS units to be able to map our school and the surrounding areas with accuracy for a state geography standard. This will also allow us to use geocaching to teach longitude and latitude which the kids have a hard time with.

I teach 7th grade world geography in an inner city school that lacks technology to teach necessary state standards.
An education standard for my state is for my students to be able to locate capital cities in Africa, Asia and the Southwest Pacific using latitude and longitude on maps and with locational technology such as Global Positioning Systems and Geographic Information Systems. I have no GIS or GPS materials to teach the students with. I have been trying to figure out how to teach this standard without the proper equipment and have found myself in a catch 22. I do not have the available funds to purchase a GPS and am having great difficulty teaching the students without it. This would also be an opportunity for my students to get outside and be active, this is something they would love to do, hands on activities in the real world.
In order to teach my students how to use a GPS, we need them. I am only asking for 2 to begin with and they are not even the most expensive ones. We just need the basic GPS system capabilities and the outdoors to make this happen!
With your help I will not only be able to apply a real world skill I will also be able to get my students outside and active during the school day. We only have limited time to work with them and then they go home to areas with little to no safe outdoor access. Please help me to better my students education and physical fitness with using a GPS to map and learn about our community in a safe environment!
