Metamorphoses, Lifecycles, and Biology

I'm a seventh-grade teacher in an urban IL middle school. My school is 100% African-American, and 99% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunches. On average my students' reading level is two grade-levels behind. My school moved to a new building this summer and we have a very difficult time getting adequate resources. I teach three sections over 25 students. My school is seriously lacking level appropriate and engaging resources. We do not have enough resources for engaging lab work. Very few of my students are able to engage with science texts, so lessons from the book bog down and degenerate into whispering and note passing. I'm creating my own lessons from scratch so that my students are able to engage with the material. I was surprised to find that my students are fascinated with living things. We'll be growing a classroom garden, incorporating reading and science into one unit. Recently the kids showed interest in working with animals next. Our next unit is on animals and life-cycles. My kids jumped at the prospect of us getting live butterflies to hatch in the classroom. This has been such a motivator for my kids. The students who struggle with reading or comprehension really put in extra effort to learn the material because they are interested in what they're studying. If I could get my hands on the kits of live butterflies for the class, then they would be able to watch up close the process of a caterpillar spinning its cocoon and emerging as a butterfly. Watching and comparing the process with moths and mantises would be invaluable lab-work for my students. What makes this type of activity so interesting is that it incorporates the science and reading standards while also teaching the kids facts about the real world, facts that they are not exposed to in their community. By funding my classroom, you'll be providing these kids with not only solid education in read, writing, and biological science, but you'll also be offering them lifetime memories. This is the kind of all encompassing project that promotes all the standard educational areas, plus focuses the children on cooperation, environmental care, and team work.
