A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
We are a Title 1 school with 100% free lunch and 98% African-American population. Title 1 funds are used to secure materials that directly relate to building skills that relate to AYP and NCLB. This urgency leaves very little funds to spend on "hands-on" activities that develop that sense of inquiry and wonderment in students.
I believe that one of my jobs as a teacher is to help develop students that will become responsible citizens and stewards of the world they live in. One way to develop that level of responsibility is to help students connect to the state that they live in. My students will be exploring the 12 eco-regions in Oklahoma and the part they play in saving the environment.
To complete this unit of study effectively my students will need materials to help them test water and soil. They will need the resources to track hurricanes which will help them understand that events happening around Oklahoma affect the environment in Oklahoma. They will need the resources to experiment with trash and garbage. This will allow them to understand that humans impact the environment.
Your help will make it possible for my students to have a hands-on experience in science and build a connection to the state in which they live.
