My students are like any other group of fun loving second graders, except for the fact that they live in a high-crime, high-poverty area. These children want to learn and grow, but unfortunately the odds are stacked against many of them. With your help, we can make their second grade year one full of wonderful memories and meaningful learning experiences.
Picture an ideal second grade classroom. How does it look in your mind? Colorful, inviting, a place you would like to spend time! This is exactly the environment that I would like to provide for my second graders.
Unfortunately, the carpet area where I teach most of my lessons and where students are expected to sit and listen is a dingy, gray remnant carpet that does not accommodate the size of my class. Not only is it a horrendous sight, but I have spent so much time breaking up disagreements between children about whose spot is whose!
As a solution, I used duct tape and assigned a spot to each child. Now, instead of listening to my carefully crafted lessons, my students spend their time picking at the tape. It's enough to make a teacher crazy!
Obviously the duct taped lines are not working. That is where you come in with the perfect solution! My classroom needs a beautiful, brightly colored carpet that provides a square for each child. No more arguing about personal space or wasting time getting students situated on the carpet. Doesn't that sound fantastic?
It might seem like just a carpet, but with your help we can provide a group of second graders with a comfortable, clean, and aesthetically pleasing place to sit. Not only that, but your support will help increase instruction time in my classroom because we will no longer have to spend time settling "carpet squabbles". My second graders and I thank you for your support!
