Students on the cutting edge of the Green Economy are looking to develop their skills. I have formed a team with 5 other teachers to create a Green Academy for students interested in green collar jobs. Students begin the 3 year program their sophomore year and are cored in their science, English and history classes. Our school is a public school in an urban city with a population of almost 2500 students, over half of which receive free and reduced lunch. We have targeted at risk students for this academy which will have 70 students its first year and over 100 the 2nd year.
The Green Academy students signed up to part of this unique community because they are interested in environmental issues as well as gaining job skills. Since this is our first year we are starting from scratch in terms of supplies and technology. These supplies will be used by students for years to come!
Students will be taking a Green Service Learning Elective as part of the academy. Our intent is to use the cameras to document the work the students have been doing for the school and the community. Planned activities include building gardens, installing solar panels, implementing recycling and composting programs and much more. We would also like the students to use the images they capture as part of their digital resume that they can use to apply for college and for scholarships.
We hope our Green Collar Careers program is the wave of the future and that other schools will look to us as a model. The requested cameras will allow us to capture our students work and make it available to other students and teachers. Our students will serve as ambassadors to teacher others the importance of sustainability.
