I teach a varied group of wonderful Kindergarten-5th grade English as a Second Language students in a Title I school.
Weather is a topic that spans the curriculum from kindergarten through 5th grade. Within these grades, I have students who vary from low beginners to high intermediates in English acquisition. Science is not always an easy subject for students whose first language is not English, so this poses the quandary of how to make sure my ESL students have a grasp of material that they are expected to know in their class by putting it in a context they can more easily and readily absorb.
By obtaining hands-on teaching materials and literature that is more easily comprehensible, my students will be able to join the two to enhance their learning on a science-based subject that will be with them throughout their elementary studies.
My students, who come from 8 different language backgrounds, work their hardest to catch up to their English-speaking peers. Their efforts would be even more substantiated by giving them provisions that bring to light the words that they read and hear in class. By associating the hands-on materials, experiments, and stories they would have in ESL class, they would be able to bridge this with the knowledge in their grade-level science class to allow them to achieve toward their high capabilities.
