it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hoping to inspire future leaders to understand and question who has the power.
My 6th and 8th grade students are mostly immigrants and children of immigrants in a high-need community. We are a small school teaching in English and Spanish with a focus on arts, culture, and community.
When we teach the constitution we want to ensure that students see a variety of ways in which governmental decisions can be made. We talk about and act out different types of government but we often find we need more to get the students involved. Our students often come to us with lower then grade level reading levels and vocabularies. We have found that teaching a social studies concept in Spanish and reinforcing it with literature in English increases students comprehension of social studies and their reading abilities.
By having a shared class reading of "Animal Farm" students will create a class community, improve vocabulary, engage in class discussions, improve understanding of power and government, think about their own role in government, increase understanding of literary concepts such as analogy and personification, and improve their reading abilities.
Your help will give these students access to not only great literature but an experience that will help them to be positive community members and more aware of how to fight for justice.
