As a gifted resource teacher I help the teachers in our school offer challenging activities to the high ability kids in their classrooms. We work with 6th, 7th & 8th graders who are starting to lose interest in the normal, slow pace of the regular learning environment.
Instead of zoning out while everyone else catches up, we plan on giving our quick learners a chance to take their science & social studies lessons outside for a real-life application of latitude & longitude.
Using the new GPS units, the kids will hunt for hidden geocaches in our local area. Later, as they master the use of geographical coordinates, they will hide new geocache puzzles for the rest of their classmates to find at the end of their regular unit. The beauty of this project is that all of the students will get a chance to use the units at their own pace, keeping the gifted kids active as well as those kids who take a little longer to master the concepts.
Do you know any gifted kids who were bored in class? If you help us out with this project you can help our high ability students "stay in the struggle" instead of checking out early. Thanks!
