I am a third grade ESOL endorsed teacher. The poverty rate at our school is 40% and rising. We have an increasing number of English Language learners each year.

Did you realize that the majority of reading that we do as adults is non-fiction? Why then should the majority of reading that we do with our students do be fiction? Understanding non-fiction texts is something that is very challenging for my students. They struggle with telling the difference between fact and opinion, locating important information, and identifying the main idea and supporting details. Practicing and mastering these skills is vital for being able to accomplish a variety of tasks that we as adults take for granted -from note-taking and writing a report to interpreting data on a spreadsheet at work.

With a variety of attention grabbing non-fiction books on a variety of topics at my disposal, I will be able to harness my students' enthusiasm as I guide them through multiple opportunities to practice the skills needed to understand, interpret, and learn from non-fiction books. The books I chose to include in this grant match social studies and science topics that we will be studying as part of the third grade curriculum so they can support reading as well as other class room activity. These books are fantastic. They have wonderful color photos that invite children right in and get them excited to read right away. These leveled books offer a wonderful opportunity to develop vocabulary and world knowledge.

Do you remember the first time that you had to write a report? It's a very daunting task for third grade students to take on, but it is something they are expected to do multiple times each year. With your help we can give them plenty of opportunities to practice these skills and build their confidence. Together we can make them successful students as who will grow to be intelligent and capable adults. Thank you for your consideration!
