"Bored" with the Black "Board" Jeopardy!! I teach 10th grade ELA II and ELA II Pre AP/Honors/GT at a Title 1 public school that has entered its fifth consecutive year of not meeting AYP (adequate yearly progress).
A rousing game of Jeopardy related to English Language Arts is a favorite activity among my students. Currently, the game consists of the chalkboard, chalk, reading questions from index cards, teams raising hands (with arguing about which team had their hand in the air first), and some students who are bored with the board that would rather play video games. Playing Jeopardy in the classroom has increased the students' knowledge of literary elements and techniques and grammar rules as well as provided a basis for analysis and evaluation of novels within our curriculum.
My students' favorite review mechanism can be transformed into an action-packed TV studio with "Classroom Jeopardy!" including all of the sights and sounds. Instead of the chalkboard, the classroom television would be utilized, and students would be able to buzz in to answer a question. No longer would team scores be tallied on the chalkboard; team scores would update automatically on the illuminated electronic Scoreboard. The link feature for the system will allow custom authoring of the game itself so that the game can be suited to current content covered within the classroom. It also allows for viewing and downloading games created by other teachers across the globe via the Internet. With the system, a timer could be set using the Jeopardy theme song for each question (1 minute). When students are reviewing test-taking strategies prior to the AP Exam (examination for college credit) and ACT/SAT testing, this would be an excellent way to help them practice appropriate pacing for the multiple-choice section since averaging less than a minute-and-a-half per exam question is a necessity.
Your help will make it possible to provide students with an interactive learning experience inside of the classroom where students learn things in a way that is different from what they are used to in the classroom. It is an excellent educational tool that garners even the most apprehensive learner's attention!
