I teach middle school in South Carolina. The students I teach are in a high poverty area, and are very high need students.
Every year we must teach a nonfiction unit to our middle school students. And every year it is a struggle to find a book that not only fits all of the requirements we need to meet, but will hold our students' interest from beginning to end. However, after much research, I believe we have found a book that meets everyone's needs. "Soul Surfer" is a book written by a teenager, for a teenager that is high interest and very educational. This book is an absolute necessity for my students.
These books will benefit my students in more ways than I could possibly explain. In a world that idolizes sports figures and movie stars, it is difficult to find a biographical book that does not follow the life of one of these figures. "Soul Surfer" is a book my students can relate to, without feeling they are being talked down to or misunderstanding. Combine these aspects with an inspirational message, and you have an ideal book for any middle school classroom.
Your help will enable my students to gain more out of their nonfiction unit than they ever have before. They will not only have a much better understanding of the section, but will have an inspirational figure to look up to. At this point, any motivational figure to give these kids is the best thing we can do. As an added bonus, this book will give my students the challenge they need to gain more information, and the subject matter to complete the unit. And with little to no nonfiction books in our school library now, this will be an incredible addition.
