Our students have received tickets to see the musical "Wicked" live on stage, and now we need to pay for a bus to get us there!
I teach high school reading to a highly at-risk population. Most of my students speak English as their second language, and most are economically disadvantaged. This year, in an attempt to hook them into school and learning, I created a yearlong unit on judgment, and I used the Broadway musical, "Wicked," as my main text. It was a tremendous success! My students began attending class regularly, many sitting next to students from rival gangs while discussing the negative implications of judging others. In January, through the work of a local benefactor, we received 71 tickets to go see the play in October! This is an unbelievable opportunity for these students, none of whom have ever seen a musical or would ever be able to afford such an adventure (tickets run $100 per seat). In addition, in April, we hosted an actor in our classroom who played the male lead role in "Wicked" on Broadway. The students were overwhelmed by his presence and by the fact that he would take a full day out of his schedule to speak with them about how "Wicked" impacted his life. The experience brought several of my students to tears!
My students have worked remarkably hard this year, and they have shown tremendous growth. In fact, 94% showed significant improvement this year on our district reading assessment (up from 63% last year). Needless to say, my students cannot afford the bus required to transport them the 60 miles to the theater, but they have worked so hard and learned so much that I would hate to have them miss the opportunity to see this inspirational show. Thus, we need your help!
You can provide the final piece to what has already been a magical year for students who have seen too little magic in their lives. By donating money for the bus, you can have a hand in closing out a unit that has changed lives!
