Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My third grade students hail from high poverty situations--yet they are curious and ambitious! Over 90% of my students receive free-and-reduced lunch funding and are culturally and linguistically diverse.

One day a student asked me about how Native Americans stayed dry in their houses. An entire discussion was launched and I realized that this was a moment to capitalize on. I teach communities as part of the third grade curriculum, but I have often felt the topic needed something to grab my students' attention. I began researching the topic of houses, and I found many wonderful book titles on the topic. I have many ideas for activities and lessons (such as design your own house and comparing and contrasting your house with others)which I can do with the listed book titles. The pictures and diagrams within the books are spectacular. I know this project will engage my students on many levels! The book titles will shed light on such houses as: hogans, kivas, cliff dwellings, pit houses, adobe, igloos, bee, reed, houseboats, stilt, batak, manyattas, painted, round houses and more. The problem is, I lack materials to make their interest in the topic a reality in my classroom.

We need quality book titles centered on the theme of houses around the world. We need geographic tools which contain current information about the world. Multiple copies of giant world atlases will enable my students to take on collaborative projects together and one large world map will give the children the experience of locating places in context.

The materials you donate will enable my students to study and analyze people and places from around the globe. It is imperative that students begin undertaking the task of placing themselves within our varied global society. This project offers them insight into the resilient and ingenious ways people survive and thrive within their community. Your contribution will really help us explore communities by opening doors on homes around the world!
