I teach in an Oregon elementary school with a high ESOL population. Our poverty rate at this school is currently 40%. I teach a blend of 3rd and 4th graders.

Do you remember how you learned how to write a research paper? I discovered just how daunting a task it can be when I assigned an explorer to each of my students this year to research. While they are good readers, I realized that they need more practice of reading with a question in mind that they must find the answer to. The challenge I faced once I came to this conclusion was finding appropriate non-fiction materials for them to practice with -especially for a few of my lower readers.

Students who are not yet comfortable as readers have higher anxiety about trying to accomplish a job through reading. All my students need practice identifying important information and taking notes on a subject. I am looking for multiple copies of high interest non-fiction topics with low vocabulary that won't scare my readers away as they practice specific research skills. My students love to learn and are excited by each new skill they acquire. They especially enjoy learning about science and history. I know that if our classroom library had more to offer them in this area, they would quickly become proficient researchers as well as experts on a variety of topics.

Your donation to this project will help ensure that my students have ample opportunity to practice research skills under the guidance of their teacher at their own individual reading levels. My students will feel empowered and confident as they progress onward in their education and face the multitudes of research projects in their future -from middle school to college. This is a lifelong skill that all of us need -whether it's to write a paper for college or to research the most efficient way to build a garage.
