I teach high school biology in the public school district. My students learn best by doing, but with budget restraints extra materials are not readily available.
Some concepts in biology are hard to grasp. When simply reading and looking at pictures, several of my students do not fully comprehend the material. Many of my students learn better by doing instead of simply taking notes. When we are able to do labs and activities, my students take on a much better understanding, and enjoy biology much more. Using models has seemed to help my students a great deal as they get to build structures and manipulate different materials.
By adding more models to our biology class I believe my students will have a better understanding of many of the concepts. By physically building the molecules, my students will be able to see how they are made and how they fit together, instead of looking at a drawing in the book. Each of these model kits will allow my students to physically put the components together and see all of the different parts of the specific molecule. With the nutrient kit my students will have the opportunity to make organic compounds such as lipids and proteins using carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. The chemical bonding kit will allow my students to see the difference between the structures of acids and bases, as well as how other molecules are made. These kits can also be utilized in chemistry and physical science to depict chemical bonding. All of these materials can be reused every year.
With your help and donation you will bring the structures of molecules to life for my students. Having a three dimensional object to manipulate and explore allows my students a new experience and a deeper understanding of the world of biology. These hands on activities let my students who are struggling with the concept see the material in a different way. Thank you for your support of science education!
