How would it feel to know that you impacted the lives of twenty young students in ways that you will never fully realize?
That is exactly what you will do when you donate to my second grade classroom. Our school is located in a poverty stricken, high crime area in which most students are performing below grade level. I am a first year teacher and as such, I have limited resources to enrich the learning experiences of my students.
Have you ever tried to describe the world to someone who has never left his/her backyard?
That's how I feel on a daily basis, answering the questions of my little ones who are seriously lacking background knowledge and relevant life experiences. Because my students live in an unsafe community, they rarely get the opportunity to play, explore, or discover their surroundings as other children do.
When studying rural communities, we discussed farms and animals that live there. One of my boys asked, "Mrs. L., what's a goat?" It nearly broke my heart that a second grader did not know this basic farm animal. With the proper resources, it could have been so simple to show him! This is one specific example, but it is indicative of the lack of world experience that my students have.
What I wish for, more than anything, is to show my students the big, beautiful world that they live in. I want it to come to life for them and I want them to experience it! With the additional resource of an LCD projector, I could bring my students on adventures in the ocean, we could scale mountains, or even see monkeys swinging in trees. These are experiences that they will never have if I do not find a way to show them.
Your help will bring the world to life for my second graders. You will quench their curiosity and help them become life long learners. You will transform it from just curriculum to life experiences! Thank you so much for your help in lighting the fire for learning in my little ones.
