I teach six wonderful students in a self-contained special education classroom. All of my students are ages 5 and 6 and at varying academic levels. The students in my classroom are all on the autism spectrum in varying degrees. Some students are very high-functioning and some are very low-functioning.
Our school is 100% special education. Students are placed in our school because they require a lot of personal support in order to reach their full potential. Our students typically fall into three categories: those with autism, those with emotional disturbances, and those with multiple handicaps. Most of the students at our school qualify for the free lunch program and our school is devastated with budget cuts and lack of funding. Therefore, it's difficult to get necessary materials for our students.
As the year progresses, my students are beginning to love reading. This, of course, is amazing to watch and I'm so grateful that they're starting to appreciate books. However, our classroom library is seriously lacking in books. Being a first year teacher, I was given a few books from retired teachers, but most are in very poor condition. Our school doesn't have the funds to buy a classroom library or provide our class with books.
I've already spent a lot of my own personal money to buy my students books and am often borrowing from other teachers in order to maintain their interest and introduce them to new and exciting topics.
Our classroom needs A LOT of help with our library. We need new books that will give the students an appreciation for books and for reading. Reading is such a powerful tool and my students deserve to become the best readers possible. We are requesting a variety of different classroom library sets in order to create the most comprehensive and age-appropriate library possible. We are also requesting library furniture so that we can take care of our new books. The current bookshelf we have is old and debilitated and towers over the kids. Many books aren't physically accessible to them, which ultimately deters them from reading.
Your generous donation would ensure that my students continue to love to read. It's so amazing to see them choose books as their "free choice activity", and I'd love for them to be able to explore different topics and types of books. A classroom library is one of the most essential things of a successful classroom and my students and I would be forever grateful to have a top of the line classroom library. Thank you so much for your time, we really appreciate it!!
