I teach in a self-contained special education classroom in New York. My students are ages 5 and 6 and at both the Kindergarten and 1st grade level. All of the students in my class are on the autistic spectrum and vary greatly in terms of ability.
Our school serves only special education students who need a restrictive environment in order to succeed. Our students typically fall into three categories: those with autism, those with emotional disturbances, and those with multiple handicaps. Most of the students at our school qualify for the free lunch program and our school is devastated with budget cuts and lack of funding. Therefore, it's difficult to get necessary materials for our students.
I'm just beginning my career as a teacher and am lacking the necessary materials for my students. We're really limited in what materials the school is able to purchase, which leaves our classroom without the activities and learning tools that our students should be entitled to.
One thing that would help my students is to have a place in the classroom that is free of distractions so that they can focus on difficult tasks. We are lucky to have a very large classroom but having such a large space makes it difficult to section off smaller areas for individual students to do work. These room dividers would provide a small "cubby" for students to work in that is free of distraction.
These room dividers would be such a powerful asset to our classroom. It can be so difficult for my students to complete their work because they are so easily distracted, and these materials would aid them so much in terms of academics. These students deserve every chance to succeed, and with your help, they can become more independent and achieve success in the classroom. Thank you!
