I teach art in two elementary schools. One school is in a middle-income neighborhood and the other is in a low-to-middle income neighborhood. The students at both schools, however, know very little about art history. I would like to change that.
When I teach my students about famous artists throughout history, they always want to know what the person looked like. I explain that often times they painted self-portraits, as there weren't cameras in those days. I would love to be able to teach a unit on portraiture and facial proportion using the students themselves as models. Also, I teach off a cart at both my schools and it would be extremely beneficial to have a heavy-duty pencil sharpener that accepts both regular and primary size pencils.
To accomplish this project I need self-portrait mirrors so students can look at themselves while they draw. They will have the satisfaction of drawing someone they know well as well as a memento of their school days.
You will make it possible for my students to participate in an activity that many art students in this district do not get a chance to participate in.
