I teach second grade in a Title 1 school in a low socio-economic area. Although I teach the second graders all the subjects, one of my favorite subjects to teach is science. Many aspects of the lives of the students that I teach are not very safe. Safety is a life skill they will use forever.
In our district every school is required to use the same text book. However, the amount that each class gets depends upon the budget of the school. For science we received a demo kit to go with our series, but it left out an essential part of science. That is safety! My students need to be safe while having fun and learning. They were very excited about being safe scientists, and we don't have the equipment needed to keep them safe during experiments.
Our class needs a safety poster so the students can refer to it during all team experiments. We also need a set of safety goggles and aprons. These items will not only protect the students, but empower them to be the best scientists they can be.
I want to keep my students safe! The students could really get into the role playing of scientists during inquiry investigations. Being safe during science is only the first step for these students who don't always know what steps to take to be safe. Using safety in science will guide them to finding safe ways to live.
